At least 25 percent of the population has genital herpes. Even though most cases are mild or even cause no symptoms at all, the infection is incurable, recurs frequently, and carries a lifelong potential for transmission, often with profound effects on current sexual relationships and the formation of new ones. For these reasons, genital herpes is the sexually transmitted disease of greatest concern to sexually active young adults, aside from AIDS.

Unfortunately, many physicians view genital herpes as an infrequent and generally trivial condition, and one of the most common complaints of infected persons is that their doctors were insensitive and seemingly had little knowledge about the disease and its management. In fact, no other STD requires a more knowledgeable, caring, empathetic health care provider.

This booklet is intended to directly address these issues. The sine qua non of excellent patient care for any medical condition is accurate knowledge about it. Genital herpes is a complex disease, and I saw a need for a resource that fills the gap between the many excellent research papers and other scientific publications that are available, which by definition are limited in scope and technical in nature, and the few available full-length books that are too long for quick reading.
