PreSchool-Grade 2-The jungle is a noisy place, and Mama Lion is worried that Baby Leo will not be able to take his nap. She implores Papa Lion to help with this dilemma. He puffs out his chest, stands up tall, and roars, "Quiet!" After the baby falls asleep, he warns the jungle animals, "If any of you makes a noise, and wakes up Leo, I will gobble you up." At first, all of the creatures are silent, but then two parrots caw and squeak, a hyena chuckles and chortles, some monkeys screech and chatter, and a hippo splashes and squelches. However, none of these outbursts is loud enough to disturb the baby, and the disappointed lion finds himself growing very hungry. When Papa's stomach begins to rumble and growl, "Loud as a banging drum," Leo wakes up crying, and the king of the jungle faces his angry wife and sheepishly takes responsibility. The text is simple and descriptive and the use of repetition and rhythmic language make the story perfect for sharing aloud. The colorful cartoon artwork is packed with humorous details. Papa's facial expressions, which range from pompous to grumpy to embarrassed, are a hoot. An energetic, lighthearted tale that will have children roaring with laughter.
