At 5:12 a.m. on the morning of April 18, 1906, San Francisco was struck by one of the worst earthquakes in history, instantly killing hundreds. The ensuing fires that ravaged the city for days were responsible for the deaths of as many as 3,000 more. In all, 522 blocks and 28,188 buildings were leveled, and some 200,000 people dislocated.
This watershed event in American history has never before been told with the richness of historical detail and insight that our foremost historian of fire, Dennis Smith, brings to it in San Francisco Is Burning. Smith cinematically recounts this terrible tragedy through the stories of the people who lived through those terrible days, from a valiant naval officer who helped save the city's piers and wharves to Eugene Schmitz, the crooked mayor, to the "debonair scoundrel" Abe Ruef, the most erudite city boss in American history. Throughout, Smith reveals many unknown details about the event, from the city's great vulnerability to fire, due to its corrupt and hasty building practices, to the widespread racism the quake unleashed and the atrocities committed by national guardsmen. Told with verve and a seasoned firefighter's knowledge, San Francisco Is Burning is the gripping and definitive account of one of the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

A huge amount of research went into this book. Mr. Smith has a wonderful way of taking facts and putting them in a very readable and interesting narrative. Many parts are hard to read because it is a very sad subject but many parts are hard to put down because the details are so interesting. The author give us fascinating profiles of the people who truly cared for the city and its people and went without rest for days trying to save it but got no recognition or appreciation for their efforts. He also looks at the corruption and self-interests that victimized those who were already in a dire situation. This should serve as a cautionary tale. The book shows that if the public is allowed to contribute and work together in rescue efforts disasters may be averted. The courage the people who stayed and pitched in showed is often ignored in the histories that are written of that time. The author tells the story of the San Francisco Earthquake in 1906 that should have been a manageable disaster but through human ego and ignorance turned into an uncontrollable fire that devastated the city. And the continued cover-up by the public officials have laid the groundwork for an even bigger disaster in the future.I have read many books about the earthquake but I believe this was the most compelling and interesting of the lot.I appreciated the fact that he ended the book with a contrast and assessment of the readiness of today's San Francisco to handle another such disaster. His conclusion should frighten anyone who lives there.
The author tells the story of the huge and devastating fire that followed the 1906 earthquake in San Franccisxo in the style sometimes referred to as "creative nonfiction". As a result the book is a delight to read, full of dramatizations of authentic events and side commentary of a most relevant type. My husband and I liked it so much we kept reading past our usual bedtime just to learn more about the events and such great characters, real people, such as Lt. Frederick Freeman. The author's knowledge of fire departments did nothing but inform the book further.
For this native San Franciscan, the April 1906 earthquake and fire has lurked mysteriously in the background of family history. SAN FRANCISCO IS BURNING has cleared away the cobwebs and although I did not find my own ancestors among those people Dennis Smith animates from letters, journals and newspaper accounts, I now know in incredible detail what they must have experienced.Smith is a firefighter and a historian of firefighting. He is also a talented writer who decided to write a historical narrative, not an academic tract, and as such the reader is moved breathlessly through the events of April 1906 without tripping over tangled language and footnotes. Smith creates a chronological account, moving back and forth between the close-up stories of a fireman and his family, an unsung Naval hero, noble civic leaders, corrupt politicians, an Army general, a nun shepherding orphans through the streets and a Chinese immigrant searching for his fiance. He only stops long enough to tell back stories of San Francisco's history and provide a gloss on the science of earthquakes and fires.By far the most important aspect of this book is Smith's fearless analysis of the human error, as well as the human triumphs, that contributed to the magnitude of the tragedy as well as to its eventual solution and the revival of the city. He corrects the long held belief that General Funston was the hero who saved the day. In fact, that's what Funston told everyone as he made decisions that fueled the fires and brought on loss of life, not only in fire but through a chaotically imposed state of martial law that had soldiers and citizens killing people left and right. Funston also suppressed evidence of the heroism of naval Lieutenant Freeman, who fought the fires tirelessly instead of responding to Funston's order for a gofer.
This is not a book about the earthquake. While the quake is discussed, it is referenced as the trigger event for the book that follows. It is about the fire and the sometimes heroic efforts of those involved. Have read several books about the quake and the stories have tended to focus on the cataclysmic shake and mention there was a huge fire made worse by later decisions. This book dives deep. Would be a stupendous reference for a walking tour of the city. Some of what is related may be lost on those who have never been to San Francisco and walked the hills, it is still a great book.
Brings the fire and destruction to life while providing interesting back stories on several famous characters of the time. As a native San Franciscan, I learned about this period in school, but we just skimmed the surface. This book is a great read for anyone who wants to know more.
I am in love with this book. Most all of Dennis Smith's facts are based on real people who survived and the history of the Great Quake and Fire is riviting. I have learned more, reading this book, than others. A must read if you are a San Francisco History buff or if you are interested in earthquakes and fires that stem from them and politics.
If you ever wondered how they did it back in those days, this is for you. It really surprised me how they managed back then before modern equipment. Coming to my own realization that we are not too different today.
A great account of the earthquake from the perspective of a firefighter
